Statistics and refresh rate

Read playback diagnostics, evaluate thermal load, and match the display refresh rate to video FPS.

The diagnostics overlay is the quickest way to separate source, network, decoder, renderer, memory, and thermal problems.

What the statistics page shows

Depending on the active source and device, the detailed page reports:

  • Media title, video output, video codec, and audio codec
  • Display FPS, source FPS, dropped frames, and decoder efficiency
  • Process CPU use and memory
  • Playback cache and network or torrent activity
  • Battery percentage, charge/discharge state, power, and temperature
  • HDR output state and selected HDR mode
  • Active play time, peak temperature, temperature rise, and thermal state

Values can be unavailable when Android, the decoder, or the source does not expose them. Compare trends over several minutes rather than treating one sample as a benchmark.

Diagnose a playback problem

Symptom First signals to compare
Periodic stalls Cache duration, network activity, and source type
Smooth audio but late video Decoder, source FPS, display FPS, dropped frames
Degrades after several minutes Battery temperature, thermal state, CPU, shader load
High power with smooth playback Renderer, HDR conversion, Anime4K, visualizers, brightness
Only one online source fails Network throughput and extractor/server behavior

Dynamic refresh rate

On Android 11 and newer, mpvRx can request the current container frame rate from the playback surface. A compatible display may switch to a matching or related mode, such as 24, 30, or 60 Hz.

The final choice remains with Android and the display. Mode switching can cause a brief blanking event, and some TVs or vendor ROMs ignore the request.

Thermal interpretation

Thermal headroom ranges from cool/full budget toward the device limit. mpvRx can reduce ambient shader samples as headroom falls and throttle Anime4K below severe thresholds. See Performance and battery for a repeatable low-power baseline.
